"Bad installation. Error invoking Java VM"
|
ERROR:
During the installation the following message appears:

SOLUTION:
There are three ways to try to solve this problem:
- If you have not logged in to your computer with administrative
rights, please do so.
Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which is installed
as a part of Java Web Start, needs the rights.
- Try to install Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
separately.
The error message above comes when JRE is tried to
install during the Web Start installation but the operation
fails. Then you can try to install JRE separately and
Web Start after that.
You can get JRE from Sun Microsystem's pages: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/download.html.
If you use Windows, choose either of the two first (U.S.
English or all languages) JRE-links and download and
install the file according to the instructions.
If there comes any error messages in the beginning,
they may tell more about the problem: e.g. you may not
have administrative rights or the service pack is too
old. In the latter case, see the option 3.
- Check the service pack of your operating system
and update it if necessary.
Java Web Start needs Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
in order to work. JRE is installed during the Web Start
installation but certain service packs (e.g. service
pack 1 for Windows 2000) are not supported. (See the
list: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/jre/install-windows.html)
You can check the version of your operating system
by right-clicking 'My Computer' on the desktop and selecting
'Properties'. The 'General' tab tells you the version.
If you need to update the service pack, you can do
it in Windows
Update pages. After the update, try to install Web
Start again or try the option 2 above.

Installation stops to Java Web Start window
|
ERROR:
When you start Valuatum Client, in Java Web Start
window the progress bar starts splashing (between white
and blue) and the process does not go any further.
SOLUTION:
Probable cause for this problem is that your local
network is configured preventing free bi-directional communication
with the Internet.
You need to configure Java Web Start to use a proxy server
(ask from your network administrator) to contact internet.
To enable this:
- Open Java Web Start from Programs menu or from Desktop
Icon.
- Select File -> Preferences -> General tab.
- Enable "Manual" configuration for "Proxies".
- Type in proxy server's HTTP name and port (provided
by your network administrator).
(You can try to look proxy settings from your browser's
settings. Look e.g. in Internet Explorer: Tools - Internet
Options - Connections - LAN Settings - Proxy server.)

Security warning
|
PROBLEM:
When installing Java Web Start the installation asks
"Unrestricted Access" to my hard drive? Is this
secure and can I press "Start"?
ANSWER:
It is secure and safe. The Valuatum Client requires
your permission to write on your hard drive in order to
work properly. We have also acquired a certificate, which
assures that it is safe to start the application.

To open or save client.jnlp file?
Create an association for .jnlp files
|
PROBLEM:
I have installed Java Web Start but Client does not
start as I browse to link http://server.valuatum.com/client.jnlp.
Instead of I am prompted to download a file (see picture
on right).
SOLUTION:
Your system is missing an association between .jnlp
files and Java Web Start. You need to create this association
manually. Follow instructions below.
Windows 2000:
- Open your Windows Explorer.
- Select from top menu bar Tools > Folder Options.
- In Folder Options find the file type .jnlp in the
list and select it.
- Press Change and you are prompted to show which application
is used to open the jnlp file. Select javaws and press
OK.
- Close Folder Options menu.
- Try now again to start Valuatum Client at http://server.valuatum.com/client.jnlp
You can also try to open the link with another browser.
For example you may have used Netscape but the association
already works with Internet Explorer.
Netscape:
Netscape 6/6.01 users, please setup the Java Web Start
MIME type (JNLP) in the Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator
-> Helper Applications section.
The file extension is "jnlp", MIME Type is
"application/x-java-jnlp-file", and it should
be handled by the javaws executable file in your Java
Web Start directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Java Web Start).

Error in login
ERROR:
During the login process, a pop-up messages says:
'Error in login:
Server server.valuatum.com not responding.'
or
ERROR:
During the login process, a pop-up messages says:
'Error in login: No server found at http://194.100.37.182:80'.
SOLUTION:
The probable cause for this problem is that your networking
connection is unavailable. Check the connection and
try again.
If the connection is available and you still cannot login,
the server might be down. This could be caused by an update
in Valuatum server. Try to login later or contact
Valuatum.

Opening a company model
ERROR:
When you try to open a company model, a pop-up message
says: 'Loading failed:RemoteInvokable - id: 'xxxx'.
SOLUTION:
The connection to the server has probably been lost
during the session. This could be caused by an update
in Valuatum client or a lost internet connection. Close
Valuatum Client and try again.

Terminating a jammed java process
ERROR:
Valuatum Client stops from responding or otherwise
seems to jam.
SOLUTION 1:
If the jamming happens during the use of a Company
model, try first to click Esc-button on your keyboard.
If nothing happens within a reasonable time, see the solution
2.
SOLUTION 2:
If your Client jams or does not respond within a reasonable
time, you may want to abort the execution process from
your workstation. To do this follow the following steps:
|
Windows 2000:
- Open your Task Manager. Normally keyboard combination
"Ctrl + Alt + Del" shows the Task Manager
window.
- Select Processes tab. This is the list of current
processes running on your workstation.
- From the list of processes find a process named javaw
and select it. Tip: Normally this process is one of
the most memory consuming ones and therefore listing
the processes according to the Memory Usage will show
this process on the top of the list.
- Kill the javaw process by pressing the button End
Process at the low right corner of window. You might
get a warning message requiring you to confirm the process
termination, press OK.
- Close Task Manger window and restart Client.
